Student privacy

What the app will know.
What it never will.

The Grades 7 to 12 app is not built yet, and we hold no data about any student. This page is what we commit to before the first one logs in, written now so that a district, a parent or a student can hold us to it.

No student logs in until two things are signed: a student data privacy agreement between us and the school district, and a consent form from the student’s parent or guardian. We ask every family for consent, not only families of children under 13.

What we collect

The least
that works.

Each item is here because the program cannot run without it. The reason sits beside it.

We will collect

  • First name and last initial. So the student’s school sponsor knows whose work is whose.
  • The class code from the school. So only students the school has signed up can get in.
  • Lesson progress and answers to practice problems. So a student can pick up where they stopped, and the app can mark numeric answers.
  • Work the student submits. Each unit ends in something the student made, and they should be able to keep it.
  • Conversations with the tutor. So the tutor can answer, and so the school sponsor and our staff can check what it told a student.

We will not collect

  • Phone numbers
  • Home addresses
  • Personal email addresses
  • Photos, voice recordings or location
  • Birthdates

Who can see it

Three kinds of people.
One company.

  • The student.
  • The teacher at the school who sponsors the program.
  • Our staff, to check that the tutor is teaching what the lessons say.
  • Anthropic, which processes each message to the tutor in order to write its reply, and may not train its models on it.

The tutor runs on Claude, made by Anthropic. Anthropic’s commercial terms say it may not train its models on what customers send it. Read the terms, and Anthropic’s rules for products used by young people.

How long we keep it

One school year, plus sixty days.

We keep a student’s data only for the school year it was collected in. Sixty days after that school year ends, we delete it. We delete it sooner if the school or a parent asks. Before it is deleted, a student can download everything they made, and bring it back the next year.

What we never do

Not for a sponsor,
not for a grant,
not ever.

  • Show ads to students, in the app or anywhere else.
  • Sell student information to anyone.
  • Build a profile of a student for any reason other than their lessons.
  • Use student work or conversations to train or build an AI system.

If you are a parent

You can ask,
and we will answer.

At any time, you can ask us to:

  • See what we hold about their child.
  • Have it deleted.
  • Stop us from collecting any more, which ends the child’s use of the app.

Write to hello@innovateyouth.org, or by mail to Young Innovators for Change, 301 E Arrow Hwy, Ste 101 - #829, San Dimas, CA 91773. You can also ask your child’s school, which can tell us to delete it.

The laws this follows: The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA); The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); California’s student online privacy law (Business and Professions Code section 22584), including the limits on artificial intelligence that take effect January 1, 2027; California Education Code section 49073.1, which sets what a district’s contract with us must contain. The data privacy agreement each district signs is what binds us; this page never promises more than it does.
